What Can Your Small Business Learn From the Latest Madea Movie? (Watch)

Once you have a formula for success, why change it? That's apparently the philosophy behind Tyler Perry's Madea franchise of movies.

The latest, “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” just brought in an estimated $27 million at the box office over the weekend, making it the number one movie in the country. Considering its low budget and fairly negative reviews, that's a decent return.

But this isn't the first Madea film that's used that basic formula. The Halloween movie is the seventh in the Madea franchise. And all have had relatively low budgets and negative reviews but high ticket sales.

From a business standpoint, that's a pretty great deal. Negative reviews can stunt the growth potential of some other movie franchises. But since Madea fans already know what they're getting, they're willing to pay to see a movie that's fun and includes some well-known characters, even if it doesn't get any critical acclaim.

You can Have Success Without Critical Acclaim

Businesses can potentially use this philosophy in some areas as well. That doesn't mean that you should shoot to have negative reviews of your products or services, of  course. But if you have a crowd-pleasing option, like a menu item or product line, that is inexpensive to make, hang onto it. If it makes your customers happy and they're willing to pay for it, then it shouldn't matter if it fails to get tons of attention or critical acclaim elsewhere.
