When marketing a business online, there are so many different platforms you need to track.

There are social platforms, online review sites, blogs, search engines, and so many others. Constantly checking and updating all those different platforms can be time-consuming and distracting from other important tasks.

But big data offers some opportunities for businesses to simplify the process of keeping up with all of those different online marketing platforms.

That’s basically what Holonis aims to provide to businesses of all sizes. Read about the company’s mission and technology in this week’s Small Business Spotlight.

What the Business Does

Uses technology to simplify the marketing process.

The company offers an all-in-one platform where businesses can maintain and manage each of their social channels, reviews, communications, and even online orders.

Business Niche

Offering an all-encompassing solution.

Richard Hollis, CEO of Holonis explains:

“We are known as your smarter marketplace because we have integrated all the components of commerce on the Internet into one place, to work as one complete system. This democratizes the online marketplace by empowering businesses of all sizes to take advantage of tools like social media publishing, content driven marketing, and online storefront creation; tools that can cost some businesses thousands of dollars a year.”

How the Business Got Started

After some careful research.

In the midst of the great recession, Hollis’s son suggested he look for business opportunities online. He says:

“Through my research and discovery, I had two “Eureka” moments: one, that the rapid acceleration of new technology created fragmentation across the Internet, which adds to the complexity of being able to exploit technology for the masses; and two, that “code is code.” After spending so much of my life understanding DNA code as software for life, I started to recognize the similarities between the human genome and the digital genome.”

Biggest Win

Getting all of the technology to work together in tandem.

When developing the Holonis product, it took a lot of work to get all of the modules, applications, features and functions to work harmoniously together. But when that happened, it was definitely a turning point. Hollis says:

“This was a huge achievement in our business’ history as we were able to accomplish a scientific algorithm that turns online marketing from a guessing game to a data-driven scientific game.”

Biggest Risk

Funding the business himself.

Hollis feels this was especially risky due to the fact that the technology was so new and developing it was such a big undertaking.

How They’d Spend an Extra $100,000

Hiring more people.

Hollis says:

“A business is only as great as its people.”

How the Business Got Its Name

From a Greek derivative. Hollis says of the name:

“Instead of a cutesy name, we wanted our name to have substance and explanation of the technology it represents. After much research and debate, we came to the decision of Holonis, which stems from the study of holons that comes from a Greek derivative of the word “Holo” which means the whole thing. A holon is all the parts that are assembled to create an independent whole and when that whole is embedded into a larger system, it becomes a part and whole simultaneously. This seems to be a little confusing to some people but is a very powerful concept of how parts and wholes are connected to create systems.”
