Neil Patel On Building A Brand With Purpose

brand purpose

It’s one of the most crucial factors in differentiating your company. Without it, your prospective customers have little reason to engage with your brand.

You struggle to figure out what your brand’s niche is. Like an architect, you try to design and construct a brand that will be a true delight to your audience.

But  something is missing. Something every successful brand needs.

It’s called purpose, and your brand needs it badly if it’s going to thrive. Lack of a distinct and strong purpose can literally kill your marketing efforts.

Attempting to market a purposeless brand is like trying to sell a luxury vehicle without the luxury. There’s just no reason for someone to choose you over your competition.

Who Is Neil Patel?

I spoke with Neil Patel about this very issue. Not only is Neil Patel an Internet marketing wizard, he has founded multiple successful business enterprises such as Crazy Egg, KISSmetrics, and Quick Sprout. If Neil Patel has something to say about purposeful branding (and he does!), you need to listen.

What Is Brand Purpose?

Simply put, brand purpose is the reason your company exists outside of its products and services. It’s about more than just making money. It transcends the profit motive.

Modern brands are finding it more and more necessary to embrace a purpose that is intended to make a difference in the world around them. It’s no longer enough to just offer great products and services. Consumers want to know what your company stands for. This is what brand purpose is about.

Why Brands Need Purpose

Why is it important to find your brand’s purpose? Because you need to be the one who defines who your brand is. As an entrepreneur, you are responsible for crafting your brand’s image, reputation, and destiny.

When asked why it’s important for a brand to have a purpose, Patel said, “If you don’t define your own brand, the marketplace will define it for you.”

It’s true. The marketplace will define your brand, and it probably won’t define it in a way that benefits your company.

The Most Important Component Of Brand Purpose

When asked what the most important component of a brand’s purpose should be, Neil Patel emphasized the importance of emotion. There should be something about your brand that appeals to the emotions of your audience.

“People should feel something when they engage with your brand,” Patel said.

There should be certain emotions that people experience because of your brand.

It makes sense. Contrary to popular belief, most of a consumer’s buying decisions are based on emotion. Sure, we’d all like to think we’re 100 percent rational as consumers, but the truth is: we’re not.

It doesn’t mean that it’s not important to make rational arguments that support our claims. It just means that we can’t afford to ignore the emotional aspect of the buying process. If we don’t learn how to engage with our customers on an emotional level, we will lose opportunities to reach more people.

How To Discover Your Brand’s Purpose

The idea of having a brand purpose sounds great, but how does an entrepreneur figure out what their brand’s purpose should be? It’s not easy to decide what your brand should stand for.

According to Patel, “Brand purpose should come from your company values. Figure out what your values are and this will shape your brand’s purpose.”

The great thing about this is that you don’t have to do it alone. Realistically, your brand’s values should come from your employees and leadership.

Patel believes that your team should have input into what your company’s values are. It makes sense. After all, it’s really your staff that is building your brand, right?

Evaluate who you are as a person. After all, as the founder, you will need to embody the values that your company adopts. It will be easier if your company’s values come from the values you already have as a person.

Examples

So what does it look like to have a brand with purpose? There are several examples.

Take a look at Chipotle Mexican Grill. Its purpose involves more than just making great burritos. Its Food With Integrity movement is about making sure that the food we consume is sourced in a more healthy way. Chipotle’s brand is committed to a purpose that transcends the profit motive.

Want another? How about Zappos?

Zappos’ brand is committed to happiness. Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh ruthlessly chases after ways to make his employees and customers happy. By focusing on creating a great experience for anyone who interacts with Zappos’ brand, he has created a brand purpose that differentiates his company from others.

Lastly, let’s take a look at the man himself, Neil Patel. When asked about the purpose of his brand, he simply said that he wants to “help as much as possible without charging tons of money.”

This is why Patel gives away so much of his knowledge and expertise for free. He’s known for creating genuinely helpful content that brings a distinct value to those who consume it. And much of this content doesn’t cost anything.

As a matter of fact, Patel’s ultimate objective is to be able to benefit non-profit organizations that are focused on changing the world for the better.

Conclusion

If you’re starting or running a business, you need to truly understand the important role that purpose plays in your branding efforts. A remarkable purpose that speaks to people is essential to the success of your marketing.

If you haven’t already, you should think about the purpose your brand is meant to serve. Think about why you started your company in the first place. What problem are you trying to solve? Why? Answering these questions will give you a good starting point in figuring your brand’s purpose.

Why do you go to conferences?

For learning…networking or the chance to expand  your mind and find some inspiration?

Maybe you want to escape the office cubicle for a couple of days or find some company after working from the home office for weeks on end.

These conferences can be large, medium or small.

We have all been to those big events. 10,000 people, booths where sales people are desperate to have that conversation with you about the features and benefits.

Others have the cubicle stocked with stunning models for hire that fake sincerity….usually very well.

Some events disappoint, others amaze and some are just worth attending because of the location. I don’t know if Las Vegas ticks that box. I went there recently…it reminded me of a shopping centre on steroids with slot machines as the main show.

For me it is the the people that you meet, and the ideas and insights that you share.

Weak ties to strong connections

It takes those weak social media connections and turns them into strong ties. The ones that turn into lifetime friends. The others that become a major business opportunity.

Getting out of your comfort zone, being open to change and challenging your thinking can connect some exciting digital dots.

Events that gather creative thought leaders, influencers and the geeks into one time bubble are to be treasured. It’s like reading a good book except…. the good bits are amplified and explained. That was the experience at the Teradata Marketing Festival I had the pleasure to attend.

On Twitter it was known as #ONEfest

Oh…I forgot to mention.

Conferences should also be about fun. Disclaimer: Pam Moore, Kim Garst and I were involved as influencers to move the digital dial. Not for our sunglasses.

In digital the future is so bright you just have to wear shades and pout!

Insights on digital marketing

The digital discussion we have had for decades has become a raging global conversation that is touching every part of our personal lives and our business fabric. But it’s not about the technology. That is just the vehicle.

Digital disruption is less about technology and more about transforming business models” – Ray Wang

Trends in digital cannot be ignored. If you do they will bite you. Maybe not this year or next year but they will.

Trends that are changing our marketing and business world include:

  • Analytics
  • Big data
  • Personalization
  • Mobile
  • Marketing automation
  • Paid digital advertising

The conference touched on the top trends in digital marketing. There were some great speakers.

In one blog post I am going to try and sum up and distill the conversations, the insights and the takeaways from some of the worlds top digital marketing experts.

Ashton Kutcher

Many conferences will chase that  headline keynote speaker. For many it has become “that” Hollywood actor. You know the one that tries to be relevant but ends up looking like they don’t get it.

Ashton doesn’t fit into that embarrassing role.

His resume in tech is like a star role in Silicon Valley. He has invested in successful start-ups. These include Skype, Foursquare, AirBNB and Path. His own venture A Plus which has pivoted to become a social media content platform focused on publishing upbeat stories (positive journalism). This platform is ranked in the top 50 websites in the USA with 27.5 million unique views.

Oh yes…he has 16.9 million followers on Twitter. He is also very real, transparent and passionate.

Coal Creative: What’s the Benefit of Marketing Online Services Locally?

coal creative Marketing Online Services Locally

The Web, aside from its ability to shrink the world, can also transform a small business into a global entity.

This is especially true when the company offers online services. Think about it: To get your offering, your target client need only access the Internet via a desktop computer or mobile device.

Geographical proximity, or lack thereof, simply isn’t a factor.

However, while the Web certainly provides massive potential to reach a mega audience, sometimes a local approach is called for. The trick is to know when.

The solution depends largely on who your target client is and where they are located.

Gerard Durling, founder of Coal Creative, an online marketing consultancy that positions itself expressly as “Northeastern Pennsylvania’s creative marketing consultant,” is an example of a company that believes in promoting local businesses as part of its mission.

Durling, from the beginning, has worked to cultivate clients in his region of Pennsylvania, roughly a two-hour drive from Manhattan and Philadelphia.

A key benefit he brings his clients is his ability to find inspiration in those cities. Local businesses, Durling says, generally are less savvy about the latest and greatest in online marketing efforts and cutting-edge related technology.

Coal Creative offers marketing support in various formats: traditional, online and “guerilla-style,” which Durling defines as the ability to throw local events that are slightly edgier, which helps fuel engagement with the target audience.

He will utilize all three marketing formats if necessary. He pulled this off in a widely touted promotional campaign to kick off the grand opening of a local nightclub client.

Where ZU (pronounced “zoo”) is based in Northeast Pennsylvania, nightclubs tend to focus their promotional muscle on publicizing “aggressive drink specials,” Durling said.

So for ZU’s grand opening, he took a page from the big city nightclub’s playbook.

In keeping with the ZU’s name and theme, makeup artists painted various animal patterns on women who then danced inside cages on opening night.

But to build buzz, Coal first created a time-lapse video showing a bikini-clad model being painted to resemble a leopard by two makeup artists. He posted the video on a Facebook page called ZU. The only content accompanying the video was a line that referenced “the most interactive nightlife experience in NEPA [Northeastern Pennsylvania].”

One local report wrote of the effort:

“An intriguing time-lapse video was uploaded to Facebook last night of a woman being transformed by makeup artists into a leopard, and while what exactly it’s promoting is not yet clear, a few hints have been dropped so far.”

The event was a hit, garnering lots of media attention and wide coverage on social media, including on SnapChat, Instagram and Facebook.

Discussing specifics of the company’s business model with Small Business Trends, Durling said: “We act as a marketing consultant for local companies. They might not be ready to hire somebody full time. We have people in-house to work with us and we also freelance some of the work out.”

Coal Creative also works with local schools to take in interns to educate about opportunities in locally based businesses.

Durling started the company about five years ago, when he recognized local businesses generally were a “little behind in the times in some areas.”

“My focus is on trying to get our community in tune with the times. It’s not just looking at them as clients — it’s about community growth,” Durling said.

Coal Creative is currently working on a video project to help build awareness of all the fun activities available in Northeast Pennsylvania.

“We have a lot of things around here, including a water park and a casino, yet there is a very negative mindset among some people who think there’s nothing to do.”

The company is using the support of local businesses to assist in this effort.

Also fueling his passion to work with local businesses is Durling’s great appreciation of direct communication—meaning face-to-face chats versus sending them texts or email. “Being able to work with someone and feel their enthusiasm is something relatable to people.”

As online marketing guru Ivana Taylor, who runs DIYMarketers.com, puts it: “Marketing online services locally makes a great strategy if the service can be used locally.”

Medina, Ohio-based DIYMarketers.com’s client mix is half local and half global.

As with any marketing effort — online or off, global or local — the emphasis needs to be on the client, she added. “The target customer is the focus of everything.  When you’re marketing online services, you’re truly covering a solution to a specific customers’ specific problem. The customers understand that location is an element but it’s not the central element.”

A global focus offers immense benefits. “I love the online service model precisely because it makes pricey marketing services available to a broader range of clients,” Taylor said.

In Taylor’s case, “there isn’t much difference in how my services are delivered locally or online virtually. I often have phone or Skype meetings with my clients whether they are two miles away or thousands of miles away.”

What ultimately determines whether your marketing efforts are focused locally or globally is the “customer with a specific problem” on who you focus, she added.

DIYMarketers, Taylor added, is a virtual marketing department that specifically assists business owners by executing the marketing efforts they dream up.

“We are just the hands that make it happen.”

Blogger Babes Teach You How to Blog for Profit

blogger babes blog for profit

Plenty of small businesses use blogging as a way to promote services or build a community around their brand. But blogging can actually be a business in and of itself.

More and more individuals are beginning to take advantage of all the different opportunities out there to monetize blogging.

From gaining paid sponsorship or working with brands on promotional campaigns to developing digital products or e-books, the possibilities for bloggers are plentiful. But in order to build a blog from a hobby into a business, it helps to have a community of like-minded people behind you. Blogger Babes is one of those communities.

Heidi Nazarudin and Ponn Sabra started Blogger Babes in an effort to share resources with other female bloggers.

The network is aimed specifically at female bloggers who focus on lifestyle categories like fashion, beauty, food, travel and DIY. With this niche, the group is able to offer resources that are likely to be actually relevant to members of the community.

Sabra said in an email to Small Business Trends, “While there are hundreds of blogger networks out there, the vast majority of them offer brand-to-blogger paid review campaigns, networking events, and virtual and live conferences. And, they all perform these tasks extremely well.”

“However, no one offers ongoing e-books, kindle e-books, do-it-yourself e-courses, and blogger-specific educational materials written for women bloggers by women bloggers. Heidi and I saw this void in our market and decided to fill it.”

blogger babes blog for profit

Before starting Blogger Babes, Nazarudin was the CEO of a tech company and Sabra was an author, publisher, and public health official. But both enjoyed running their own blogs and wanted to be able to make a living doing that instead.

“Heidi and I are fortunate to make our own schedules, travel the world, and live our lives on our own terms, because we built our blogs into a business that affords this lifestyle,” Sabra said in her email. “And, we believe if someone is interested enough to start a blog, then she, most likely, is searching for this flexible lifestyle too—which we warmly call the ‘blogger lifestyle’.”

blogger babes blog for profit

Of course, there are plenty of bloggers that run perfectly acceptable blogs as hobbies. However, as Sabra points out, once bloggers are able to make some money blogging, they’re often able to spend more time improving their blogs. And that often leads to higher quality content.

Sabra said in the email, “Once a blogger consciously and actively decides to explore the opportunities to make money from her efforts blogging, only then will she enter the mindset of a pro blogger. This is the mindset Heidi and I teach, promote and advocate to all our members.”

The platform is free to join. That free membership includes a weekly newsletter full of upcoming events and blogger campaign opportunities, as well as a listing in Blogger Babes’s Member Directory, which brands can browse to find bloggers to work with on their promotional campaigns.

There are also paid subscriptions, which include things like eKits, which offer further information and training related to the site’s monthly blogging topics. And then there’s the Ultimate Blogging Binder, a free digital resource guide for Blogger Babes looking to learn more about building a business around their blogs.

Increase Clicks with 3-D Image Carousel on Facebook Ads

Facebook Ads offers several unique features to help marketers increase their conversions, and their image carousel option for their ad system is a good one.

Facebook’s image carousel option for Facebook Ads allows businesses to advertise multiple products with just one ad. Users can scroll through different images that appear on just one ad.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 4.57.00 PM

Facebook’s option for image carousel ads have recently been opened up for mobile ads, too, so we figured now was a good time to go over why you want to use them, and how to create them.

Why You Want to Use The Image Carousel on Facebook Ads

The 3-D Image Carousel, which allows you to feature three to five different images and/or products on a singular Facebook Ad, offers some awesome benefits.

First, it automatically helps your ad to stand out against everything else on their Newsfeed. Sometimes it’s better for your ads to fade into the Newsfeed for a more seamless integration, but in the case of the multi-products ads, it helps your ad to stand out in the best way possible. The image carousel ads have seen increases of engagement and conversions compared to other types of Facebook Ads.

A second benefit is that each image can direct users to different locations on your website. If they click one image, for example, they can be taken to that exact product.

The third major benefit you get when using the image carousel option on Facebook Ads is that you get to feature three to five images on one Facebook Ad. This allows you to feature multiple products or images, helping to make sure that your one ad appeals to more people, and your chances of getting those clicks and conversions increase.

Screen Shot 2015-06-14 at 5.31.54 PM

Fun bonus: Facebook automatically optimizes your ad for you with what they call “creative optimization,” where they will put the best-performing images and links up front for each person who sees your ad. They do the work for you to put your highest converting images up front, taking some of the work off of you.

Fun bonus number two: Facebook doesn’t charge extra for carousel ads.

Facebook just recently made the image carousel option available for mobile ads, too, so no matter what type of ad you’re running, you can still utilize this feature. As we always mention, if you think this type of ad could benefit you, it’s at least worth split testing.

Recommended Dimensions

Facebook offers recommended dimensions of images and text for optimal performance when using their image carousel on Facebook Ads. These recommendations are:

  • Image Size: 600 x 600 pixels
  • Text: 90 characters (This is what will fit across small screens)
  • Headline: 25 characters
  • Link description: 30 characters

Keep in mind that, as always, your image cannot include more than 20% text on your image, and Faceboko now helps you determine how much text you have with their grid tool.

Facebook also offers a tip about how the recommend getting best results with the image carousel, recommending that you use specific product imagery when targeting returning or high-intent customers, but that you utilize lifestyle imagery with new customers.

How to Create Image Carousel Ads

To create image carousel ads, you’ll start by creating your ad as you normally would—you choose your objective, which in this case, must be either website conversions or clicks to a website.

You’ll fill out the targeting and budgeting information however you see fit, and on step 4: create your ad, you will choose “Multiple Images in one ad.”

Screen Shot 2015-06-19 at 1.02.05 PM

When you scroll down, you’ll see that they automatically have three slots for you to put in images, headlines, and links. You can increase these to five.

Screen Shot 2015-06-19 at 1.10.39 PM
After you enter in all the information, you can preview your ad, seeing how it will appear in all format.

Screen Shot 2015-06-19 at 1.02.35 PM

Recently released for mobile ads, you can now take advantage of the benefits of image carousel ads across multiple platforms and devices.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve got products that are visually striking (or even tangible products that you know would do well on Facebook), using the Image Carousel is a great way to promote multiple products at once while increasing the chance that more users will see the one that will actually get them to click.

To see more about increasing conversions on Facebook Ads, you can see our free Beginner’s Guide to Facebook Ads, as well as read more about our FB Ads Formula, which has quadrupled conversions for members in the past.
